8 day self-drive program
Due
to their favorable geographical position the Italian Lakes enjoy an
excellent climate; here lush Mediterranean vegetation can be found
around picturesque villas and luxuriant gardens. There are fascinating
landscapes, small islands and towering mountains in this lake-region,
which extends from Piedmonte to the Veneto and on into Switzerland.
This tour combines the glacial lakes of Maggiore, Como and Garda.
Day 1 - Arrive - Lake
Maggiore
- Arrival at Milan airport, pick up the rental car and drive to Lake
Maggiore where you stay for the next 2 nights

Day 2 - Lake Maggiore
- Lake Orta
- Breakfast in hotel
- Included boat cruise to the two beautiful islands of the Borromeo
Gulf. A boat will take you from the Port of Stresa to visit the 2
beautiful islands of Isola Bella with its Borromeo Palace, Isola Pescatori
a picturesque fishing village
- In the afternoon drive to Lake Orta, with its famous Island of San
Giulio. (Drive approx Km 25) Orta is situated on the shores of the
eponymous lake, has many old buildings of striking appearance and
elegant holiday homes. The 16th century Palazzo della Comunità
opens out onto porticoes with pillars and granite columns. The pretty
town is overlooked by a wooded hill over which are spread the 20 chapels
of the Sacro Monte. Don't miss the boat trip to the island of San
Giulio, dominated by the bulk of the Seminary!
Day 3 - Lake Maggiore
- Lake Lugano - Lake Como
- Breakfast in hotel
- Travel along the beautiful lake road and stop at Locarno, the main
centres of the swiss part of the Lake Maggiore.
- Continue to the Swiss town of Lugano on Lake Lugano, the most important
touristic and economical centre of "Canton Ticino".
- Stop to visit the historical center with the Church Santa Maria
degli Angeli with the famous frescos by Luini.
- From Lugano you drive to the Lake Como for the next 2 nights

Day 4 - Lake Como
- Breakfast in hotel
- You can begin your excursion in Tremezzo with a visit at Villa Carlotta.
This beautiful building was given as a marriage present from Princess
Marianne Von Prussien to her daughter Carlotta when she married Prince
George Von Sachsen-Meiningen. The family renewed and embellished the
garden that is today composed of many terraces in a 19th century Italian
style.
- Driving along the coast you can stop in Cernobbio where you can
admire the famous Villa d'Este. It was built by Pellegrino Tibaldi
in 1873, and then used (still today) as a luxus hotel. Here you can
stop for a cup of tea and enjoy the magic atmosphere of the Villa
and the wonderful view.
- Continuing your journey you reach the main City "Como"
of Lake Como where you can visit the historical centre (Duomo, the
Basilica of San Fedele, and the mediaeval walls).
- After visiting the Como, we suggest that you drive further along
the coast where you follow a narrow and winding road with a panoramic
view overlooking the lake and you reach Bellaggio. Here you can admire
the picturesque village and view part of the Italian Alps. At this
point you take the ferry boat that will bring you to the other side
of the lake "Cadenabbia" and thereafter you drive back to
Tremezzo

Day 5 - Lake Como to
Lake Garda
- Breakfast in Hotel
- Today you will drive from Lake Como to Lake Garda. We suggest that
once you reach Desenzano you exit the motorway and drive along the
West Coast of the Lake Garda passing through the towns of Salò
and Gardone Riviera which are worth of a short visit. At the end of
your journey you reach the town of Riva del Garda or Malcesine (t.b.c.)
where you will stay for the next 3 nights.

Day 6 -Sirmione and
Verona
- Breakfast in Hotel
- In the morning drive along the Gardesana to the famous peninsula
of Lake Garda: Sirmione. A number of factors contributed to create
the present fame which Sirmione enjoys: the pleasantness of the place,
the marvellous landscape, the mildness of the climate, the poetry
of Catullus, the remains of his magnificent Roman Villa "Le Grotte
di Catullo", the "Scaligera Castel" and the springs.

- In the early afternoon continue to Verona, the second largest city
of the Veneto Region. Drive approx Km 36 On arrival in Piazza Bra
the city offers many options: a visit to the Arena, 2000 years old
and one of the more complete amphitheatres in Italy. It is now used
primarily for
- Verona's summer productions of the opera; a visit to the city museum,
the Castel Vecchio, built in 1365 and the most important of the Scaligera
Castles; a walk along Via Mazzini, the main shopping street eventually
reaching Via Cappello and one of Verona's most famous landmarks: Casa
Capuleti with Juliet's balcony. From here within 300 yards the opportunity
to visit Piazza Erbe (Herb market), Piazza dei Signori surrounded
by Palazzo Scaligero, the Loggia dei Consiglio, one of the most famous
Renaissance buildings in Verona, Palazzo dei Capitani and, just off
the square, the Scaligera tombs dating from the 14th century with
the chapel of Santa Maria Antica. Alternatively relax outside the
Café Dante in the corner of the square.
- On the way back to the hotel we suggest you take to motorway "Brennero"
and exit Rovereto Sud then follow sign for Lake Garda

Day 7 - The Brenta Dolomites
- Madonna di Campiglio
- Breakfast in Hotel
- After breakfast departure for the discovery of the famous Brenta
Dolomites. Drive towards Lake Tenno from where you can admire the
sparkling blue waters of this lake and then walk to the village Canale.
This medieval village will take you back to 600 years where houses
have maintained their original characteristics. Canale also inspires
a lot of artists who come for a stay and leave their works to enrich
the collection of the "House of the Artists".
- Then on through Ballino pass to Fiave' , once situated by the lake
Carera. Today the lake is a well kept and protected biotop. This is
a very interesting district due to the archeological finds as the
pile-dwellings dating back to the bronze-age resort but also known
for its summer walks.
- We then arrive in Pinzolo (770 mt), where you can admire the. beautiful
frescoes of the allegory of the "Dance of the death" (1539
of Simone Baschenis) on the San Vigilio church.
- We continue to Madonna di Campiglio, a famous ski resort, closed
from east by the Brenta group and from west by the Presanella,. The
town started off as a resort attended only by the Austrian elite in
1868 who chose it to be their winter and hunting residence.
- We go across the Rendena Valley down to Comano Terme and we reach
the Sarca Valley with its romantic Lake Toblino. This lake is set
in a romantic frame with a castle on the peninsula.
- Stop for a wine tasting in a typical cellar.
- Back to the lake Garda through the Sarca Valley, famous for its
fortifications, lakes and the "marocche" you will see a
spectacular landscape where there are wells of glacial origin left
in the valley during the ice-age and forming a sort of moon-planet
which makes it so attractive.

Day 8 - Departure
- Breakfast in Hotel
- Drive to Malpensa airport for your flight back
- Enter the motorway in Peschiera to Milan
