South
East England Tour
DAY
1 and 2
The first two nights of your tour will be spent in London, one of
the world's great capitals. Start off in the West End and see Trafalgar
Square, the National Gallery, Buckingham Palace, St. James' Park,
the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey. Nip to Harrods in
Knightsbridge or Oxford Street for world-renowned shopping or browse
around lively Covent Garden or Soho. The British Museum in Bloomsbury
houses one of the greatest collections in the world and is a must
see. In the city you can browse around this famous financial district
and take in St. Paul's cathedral and the Tower of London. There are
several world-renowned museums and art galleries, most free to enter,
all over the center of London and further out, and into the suburbs
of the capital you will find wonderful sights such as Hampton court
and Ham House. Nightlife in London is rich and varied from the glamour
of theater land in the West End to the bars and restaurants of Soho,
with everything under the sun in between.
Overnight: London (2 nights)
Day
3 and 4
You will travel southeast through Kent, "The Garden of England",
to Canterbury. There are so many superb gardens to visit in Kent,
with one of the most popular gardens surrounding 14th century Sissinghurst
Castle. Nyman's Gardens in West Sussex features old roses in a traditional
circular garden while at Great Dixter a series of Gardens including
a sunken and topiary garden surround a 15th Century House.
Canterbury cathedral is the mother church of the Anglican faith. St
Augustine re-established Christianity here in the 6th century, and
the murder of Thomas Becket here in 1170 made it an important shrine.
Despite being heavily bombed during World War II, much of the medieval
streets and parts of the city wall of Canterbury still remain. Chaucer's
works are brought to life in the Canterbury Tales Center. Overnight
: Canterbury area (2 nights)
Day
5
Travel southwest to Brighton. This graceful Georgian/Victorian resort
seems to be as fashionable and popular in the 21st Century as it was
in the 19th century. The Royal Pavilion, built in the style of an
Indian palace, and the museums and art galleries, contribute to the
cultural side of the resort, whilst the sophisticated nightlife adds
a cosmopolitan chic. A large beach with elegant promenade and pier
complete the picture of the English seaside resort par excellence.
Overnight : Brighton area (1 night)
Day
6 and 7
Continue a short distance to Chichester, which stands between the
South Downs and the sea, combines the pleasures of both. Its busy
yachting harbor and countryside reflect the seafaring and agricultural
past of the town. That Chichester is a Georgian city is soon obvious:
to find its medieval aspect it is necessary to search more diligently.
Chichester Cathedral stands in the center of the city, a dominating
influence and a landmark for all the surrounding countryside. In 1075
William the Conqueror ordered a cathedral to be built in Chichester
and the main part of the present building was dedicated in 1108. After
two serious fires it was re-consecrated in 1199. Just outside Chichester
to the west is Fishbourne Roman Palace, which was built in the first
century and is famous for it's remarkable mosaics. West Dean Gardens,
just north of Chichester offers thirty-five acres of delightful ornamental
grounds, with numerous trees, shrubs, and a 300ft pergola. There is
also a beautifully restored walled kitchen garden.
Overnight : Chichester (2 nights)
